    In this content, we define different memory timings and talk about the ratios between timings. Primary timings are focused on today, including CAS Latency (CL), tRCD, tRP, tRAS, and more. We also talk about command rate, and provide some benchmarks with tRFC and tREFI testing for memory overclocks on an 8700K CPU. Memory timings impact performance on Intel and AMD similarly, though the first round of Ryzen CPUs were particularly sensitive to memory timings. This brought timings back to the forefront of everyone's minds, and we're here to explain memory timings and what they do. A future content piece will talk about secondary and tertiary timings, but we are focusing on primary timings for now. This applies to Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron memory alike, which is used by all the vendors (Kingston, GSkill, Corsair, etc.).

@ Bob No, your 4 memory sticks in four memory slots will have dual channel, your ram will stay single rank which is actually a tad faster at given tasks than dual rank ram. I know sounds pretty confusing at first.

To point out a mistake at around 3:15, you said the speed of light is our max speed here. Electrons do not go at the speed of light, actually moving at a speed of 1 meter per hour, it's just the domino effect of charges that make it instantaneous such as the light of a bulb.

It's easy. In a nutshell, buy good memory, start with XMP speed, likely not stable, increase vdimm and SOC voltages until close to stable, decrease XMP speed one notch, then tighten (decrease) timings, that will likely return you to some instability, now move on to secondary timings and relax (increase) them slightly which should return you to stability. Done. Remember to test after every change. You will find the sweet spot where gains are minuscule or non existent. Leave it there. Write down all the changes along the way and keep them in case you have to start from scratch one day. You are right about good old trial and error.

Is there somewhere we can just see ideal/optimized sub timings for say 3200Mhz @ 14 14...? I don't have enough time for this, I just want the best performance with a template to enter into my BIOS but I can't find anything. I thought I'd just be able to google and find big lists of ideal templates etc.. do people keep them private? Are they secrets?

Also worth noting that if Intel had abbreviated Extreme with an E, XMP would be EMP - which might be a deterring abbreviation for anyone unaware of what it really does, but knows what an Electro Magnetic Pulse is.... :)

I hate overclocking ram for the simple reason that setting one timing could make another timing invalid and results in stability issues, but at the time I like the outcome adjusting timings can bring to a system.

I run my 2666 rated corsair lpx at 3000mhz 13 16 16 28 278, I cant get that 16 down to even 15... I am doing something wrong, all my secondary and tertiary is modified by a preset for 3200 Samsung. mem timings is a bitch, it is 16 18 18 36 360 xmp

Any chance you guys would do a tutorial on overclocking memory (speed and primary timings mostly) while explaining your steps? I understand (now, thx to this video) that what you can achieve is dependent on many variables including motherboard, CPU IMC etc.. But most memory overclocking tutorials out there don't explain the why someone would lower this timing vs raising it or why lowering this one making the other needing to be higher etc... It always seems random, which trial and error seems to be the point, but I'm sure there are some of them that actually know why they are doing it this way; They just never fully explain it. Thanks!

You mention that XMP timings for specific manufacturers is included in some motherboard BIOS... Is it feasible for 'Gamers Nexus profiled Memory' to be tested and sold with BIOS update - or is the silicon lottery too random to economically test and sell optimised memory?

It seems Ryzen chips are affected more by memory speed and timings than Intel- something about the Ryzen architecture 'Infinity Fabric' they talk about. Does anyone have any idea where the bottleneck is in the RAM to CPU connection- Some reviews have shown 10%+ improvement from 'fiddling with numbers'- but how fast can you go before the CPU bottlenecks the memory? PS I don't know and am mildly computer literate. Is it feasible that selected RAM could make these CPU's well above expectations?- or would the cost of RAM be such that you would better buy a more expensive CPU?

Tried all sticks of RAM, then left it with 1 stick, still didn't work. My brain hurts after watching only 6 minutes of this video. I'm currently looking at getting more RAM for my machine. I currently only have 8gig, but want to upgrade to 16gig. My MB only has 2 slots, so I have to get a 2x8gig kit. My MB will run at 2133MHz with upto 32gig. I'm confused with the latency numbers. I've looked at 3 lots of RAM, but they all have different latency values. What's quicker? 14-14-14, 15-15-15 or 13-15-15. Thanks in advance.

Liked the highly technical detail yet simplified, thanks, keep it up. 1T or 2T is significant in performance, I'd say between 33-50% faster with 1T, this should not be set manually but detected by the MoBo from the DIMM, fortunatelly my 4 DIMMs are detected as 1T when I detected them Automatically individually by my MoBo, so I cn set all 4 of them to 1T and have no problem, is I'd buy 1T RAM primarily
