Tom Szaw yes, so far no issues with those, even in -20C temps and blowing snow we had last week. When iced in just a bit of extra pressure breaks them free and they then move easily.

Sick! What kind of winter tires are you rocking?

Vor 23 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

+Paul John Raptis In general to get the best traction on snow and ice you want to use a taller and sometimes also narrower tire. This is because the lovely sharp steering response of the 20" 35 series tire that makes it so fun to drive on warm summer roads actually works against you in winter, where you really don't want the contact patch making any sudden moves that will disrupt what little grip it's able to get. So going with a smaller diameter wheel and taller tire (the two combining to give the same overall diameter) helps slow things down to maintain grip as well as making transitional moves (like when you break into a drift) gentler and easier to control.

Vor 15 Tage
Paul John Raptis

Mad Hungarian Thanks a lot! Any reason why you went with smaller winter tires instead of 20” to match with your performance rims?

A little bit dangerous for you and other people to do it on a public road, don't you think?

Vor 24 Tage
Daniil Vodopian
Daniil Vodopian

+Mad Hungarian Good thing you chose a road with good visibility and watched out for traffic. I am a bit worried for people who will try to repeat your experience with Model 3 but without those precautions. Maybe a safety disclaimer is in order. The other factor of risk is the pedestrians. We all know that people can pop up on the side of a road at any time, so sliding sideways may actually hit them.

Vor 24 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

Daniil Vodopian if there was any following, oncoming or merging traffic I’d agree, however you’ll note there wasn’t. This is because I chose a little-used access road in a industrial park that has clear lines of sight on all corner entry and exit points and made sure no one was near before executing the maneuvers.

Thanks another thing I didn’t know. I saw a P3D today with the white and black interior and white dash. While my wife abhors white interiors I’m liking its look the more I see it. The convo of black and white is smart. Maybe one day we can order it without that white dash!

LOL! I love the idea, but the practical result of MH Mode as proposed might not end well :) For now I'd be perfectly happy if they just shut off the pre-cooling for Track Mode at low outdoor temps. I think it would be interesting to hear about tire profiles for summer and winter tires, noise, wear (economics), grip and handling. I would appreciate any of these topics. Thanks!

I'm the same, wipers on dry glass makes me insane! I had set the wipers to manual low intermittent on purpose to actually reduce the frequency.

I very much love this video. I do NOT have the performance version but I do have the AWD version. I’m awaiting our Minnesota snow storm to see what I think about throwing it around in the snow. Coming from a Subaru STi, winter time is really the only time I want to throw the car into controlled slides. I actually REALLY look forward to it. I was asking Elon on twitter for a “rally” mode for the non perf versions since I have zero interest in a track mode and roasting tires in the summer.

Vor 27 Tage

fluffybunnyz I’ve been lobbying for all versions of the 3 to get at least some version of this too. Makes no sense when every other premium sport sedan offers some kind of Sport mode for ESC. I get that this makes for a great incentive to get folks to upgrade to the P, but why give the ICE competitors any advantage when you don’t have to?

I’m trying to find a way to change my tires on my Performance Model 3. I want to keep 20’s and go with an all season. Do you have any suggestions on where will do that correctly? Tesla says there are no all seasons that will work on it. But some tires sites say there are. So I don’t know what to do.

Vor 27 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

+Eugene Lee The OE wheels are very conventional in design, no special procedures required for mounting or balancing. Even lifting this car is not particularly difficult as long as the shop has a lift with "soft" pads and they adjust them precisely to line up with the reinforced points in the car's floor. Any qualified tire shop that has properly trained techs and and good equipment should be able to take care of it. Maybe put a call out on the M3OC forum to see if anyone in your area can make a recommendation.

Vor 27 Tage

Does track mode disable the chirp for when both pedals are pushed? I figure as an experience rally professional you are most certainly a left foot braker. I understand that regen eliminates some of the need for left foot braking but it's really quite infuriating (on the non-Performance Model 3) when it chirps at you mid corner for touching the brakes while still on the throttle a little.

Vor 28 Tage
StalePhish
StalePhish

+Mad Hungarian That is great! Thanks for the research. I wish just that portion was available on all trims as a toggle option in the Driving settings or something. The regen weight transfer made me feel sick the first day of driving it but I've quickly adjusted. Mostly a hard habit to break, but I guess one that I don't want to break. And it's also a bit annoying when diving the dozens of demos to friends, family, and coworkers, when they ask "oh what was that beep?" and the vast majority are like "left foot for brakes? why would you do that?"

Vor 27 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

Actually you CAN left foot brake in Track Mode, apologies for not reporting on this. Although I noticed the chirp disappeared it wasn't obvious when I was doing the initial testing whether it was keeping any power on when braked. After doing some more tests today can confirm it will let you keep what feels like about 10% power on while braking, not much but enough to adjust the attitude a little if desired. But I found that just the regen weight transfer was more than enough to get it rotating into the corner with ease. At least the option to do so is there!

Try it in chill mode...if possible???

Vor 28 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

+d1oftwins Correct, that's a more technically accurate way to describe the effect. My point was that you wouldn't see any significant difference in Chill Mode because it uses the standard ECS and TC settings, Chill isn't available in Track Mode. So the line the car takes when accelerating/decelerating/braking/steering will remain the same as shown in the first part of the video, because in conditions as slippery as these the ECS and TC will intervene long before you even reached the lower power available in Chill Mode.

Vor 27 Tage
d1oftwins
d1oftwins

+Mad Hungarian To my knowledge (from other videos) it does not just remap the acceleration pedal but also ramps up acceleration over time until an acceleration limit that is below the capabilities of the model you drive.

Vor 27 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

Keith Spiro A Chill Mode demonstration would look pretty much exactly like the first segment where I drive it around without Track Mode engaged, as the TC and ESC settings remain the same. Chill just reduces the accelerator sensitivity.

Drifting in 3

Vor 28 Tage
Loanword Eggcorn
Loanword Eggcorn

+Peteto Chibs Yes, it's not a drift mode, and yes, it does allow much larger slip angles, and yes, it will try to intervene eventually, and yes, if you disable the wheel speed sensors, more of the stability and/or traction controls may be removed. That said, the slip angles are so large with Track Mode that it almost is a drift mode. I'd wager the *sustained* slip angles allowed by Model 3 Track Mode are much larger than your BMW's. The angles look huge to me, and they seem to hold for a long time. You really should try the Model 3 to compare for yourself. Agree the purpose of Track Mode is to go faster around a race track and not to drift, which is very slow around a race track or anywhere else. The slip angles allowed by Model 3 Track Mode are so large that they could result in slower lap times if the very large slip angles were used on a race track. A major advantage of allowing large slip angles in Track Mode would be to be able to recover from excessive (i.e. slow) slip angles inadvertently entered into by a driver not able to keep the slip angles within a better (narrower) range. P.S. Your English is excellent; better than 90% of native English speakers. :)

Vor 28 Tage
Mad Hungarian
Mad Hungarian

+Peteto Chibs I'd love for you to be able to join me in the car for a session. No it technically isn't a drift mode, but boy can you drift it hard if you want with nearly no intervention. Some of the most lurid examples were edited out but believe me, you can get it sliding completely sideways for long stretches and even flip it 180 degrees with full power on.
