I know this is already too late. But why not try ice water? Dump the radiators (without fans) into a bucket of ice water. It should get some a few more mhz on the GPU since Nvidia Boost 3.0 is temp sensitive.

Hey Steven, thanks to you I got the overclocking bug again and I am trying to see if I can learn more. (I'm not a pro OCer by any stretch of anyone's imagination!) I am the guy who created and authorizes or denies peoples' overclocking entries on the mmo-champion.com computer forums! Anyways, I wanted to ask if you were using K Boost in eVGA Precision here, I just turned it on (after figuring out every little thing it needed me to shut off) and once I had it on, it gave me an almost +200 on my Firestrike score, landing me at 22,429 total. I have a 1080 Ti eVGA FTW3 Hybrid @2050 on the core and 12.4GHz memory. CPU is the ol' i7-5820K@4.2GHz, I've never been able to get 4.3GHz stable on this thing, but I've also never bothered tinkering with BCLK or anything, so maybe there's still some juice left to be squeezed out of this guy... Still, if K Boost is okay on hwbot, then that might help to turn it on, since it forces the overclock constantly, instead of fluctuations! I always find sometimes when 3DMark cycles between renders, the clock drops and doesn't always jump back up before the new scene begins, so the score is unnecessarily affected. Just something to ponder before you do this again. You know you want to... you know you have to. ;) :P

Thanks for doing this great video as always. For me it was a video since I was not here while it was live. Over clocking is so much fun and always a great way to learn about hardware. Besides that pushing the hardware to it's max is always extra fun. I do not have this type of hardware to play with if I did no body probably would see me for about 3-4 days. I only have a i7 2700K Sandy Bridge CPU that likes to be over clocked. I am also only on air cooling but with the way I have my setup and mods done to the case (actually looks good as well) I have great air movement. I have been able to boot into Windows 10 and run a few benches all the way up to 5.3GHz but with air cooling the heat gets in the way in a short time I am sure if I had a good water cooling setup heat would not be as big of an issue at this speed. I can run @5.1GHz run benches and play games fine (when I had it setup in the basement with room temp 18-19c). I have since moved this PC upstairs to the living room and set it down to 5.0GHz (room temp is about 21-22c) which raises the CPU temp a bit to about 83c-86c under stress tests & 53c-62c gaming Vsync on & 56c-72c Vsync off. I know that is not all that warm & is probably ok but my way of thinking is yes I over clock it to it's limits but I have also made sure it has never got overly warm very long as in to the 90c range which is why it probably has lasted for so long. I do plan on getting a good AIO water cooler probably a 360 rad with a good block and show horn it into the system case at the top of the case. My case is a Antec 9 Hundred Modded a bit and no 5.25 drives installed but there is a third fan in that spot blowing into the case like the other do fans that were built into the case when I bought it. There is the 210mm fan at the top it sucks air out and blows it straight up out the top of the case. I was thinking of placing the 360 rad under that fan as well as having the triple fans on the 360 rad I figure that should give a lot of air movement for the big rad to keep it cool. Heat from the video card is not a factor since it is in it's own chamber in the middle of the case so the heat from it never goes up into the CPU chamber and the video card blows it's hot air out the side of the system case since I made a port in the side panel so the video card could throw it's heat straight out of the side of the case. The temps in the CPU chamber area are always at about room temp which is why for my system the room temp actually plays an even bigger role in how warm the CPU will get. I spent a lot of time making these changes to the case well more thought about it the actual time spent doing the changes probably was about 1.5 hours. I tried a lot of different things before coming to the end result that worked out the best for this system and how cool it keeps everything. I wish case makers would actually spend more time on cooling designs and worry less about RGB lighting and how to make things more pretty but at the same time making things worse for cooling. Air movement for me is the number one aspect of how a good case is going to work for me anything less is worthless to me so there are a lot of worthless cases out there right now at least for me that is.

Whoa, the Titan V stock passed my 2015 crossfire setup (value of $500 for 2x R9 Fury about a year ago, new prices). I only get 30k and it gets 32k. Is it worth the extra $2k for just 2k more points though? I can still add another card to my setup (or double it), but the Titan V cannot... I'm disappointed Volta doesn't support SLI, that means this Titan might get 60 fps on Crysis 3 at 4k Ultra (but without AA, which looks amazing in that game). http://www.3dmark.com/fs/14432394 Very minor overclock, we are talking 25 Mhz on the core and 0 on the HBM. Its really not worth mentioning, but I will for disclosure purposes. Ryzen at 3.9 Ghz, Memory at 2666-13-13-13 (something easily achieved by anyone I would think).

Question? Did he ever really set Nvidia Control Panel up right? I know he changed the Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance but in my experience, you also have to chance Adjust Image Setting With Preview to Use The Advance 3D Image Settings. Just doing this alone will boost my score from around 9,200 to about 10,600 and then if I change other settings in the Nvidia Control Panel to performance mode will hit over 11,000. It might not matter I have no idea how Fire Strike works while it is running but when not running Prefer Maximum Performance your GPU clock will drop to as low as 200Mhz and this could give lower frame rates at the start of a new test for a split second. It for some reason has a huge impact on my scores.

the only thing i noticed is that after you lowered the Timings on the DRAM, you were then getting lower Combined Scores. You were then also unable to get +200 HBM Clock, Lowering your GPU Score by around 1000 Points. Dunno how to tag a time but was bang on an hour in that you got 7th first time (31433) then you changed the DRAM timings and things pooped from there. Obviously you managed to pick it up in other areas but that DRAM Felt a Little Unstable from Watching it, and it was the one thing that was missed when looking back at what went wrong, and never got looked again. Pretty sure Nvidia's said that they're not going to be making multiple architectures at the same time too. Anyway, mainstream Volta/Ampere is going to be current Volta without the tensor cores, and less CUDA cores as they go down from the high-end as usual. The 1180 Ti's going to most likely be using HBM2 but might GDDR6, and then the lesser rest will be using GDDR5/X. Since they're going from 16nm to 12nm that'll be a 10% increase in performance/watt, so either we'll get lower power consumption at the same frequencies, or more frequency at the same power consumption. Since it's another architectural optimisation, and this time aimed at more features (e.g. full async compute support) rather than much higher frequencies like Pascal was over Maxwell, it means performance can roughly be measured by CUDA core count. 1180 Ti = 4864 CUDA Cores = 35% to 40% more performance over a 1080 Ti in high-level APIs depending on clocks. 1180 = 3840 = Titan Xp 1170 = 3200 1160 = 2560 = 1080 Can't say below this because it's hard to predict whether or not they'll have multiple 1160's or 1150's, or even an 1130.

Vor year
Alex Marin
Alex Marin

You shouldn't expect a similar jump going from Maxwell to Pascal. There is no new process this time. The 12nm is just a 16nm+ enabling roughly only a 4-5% increase in transistor density which for all intents and purposes is not significant. So marginally higher transistor density, and same clock speeds mean that any increase in compute resources comes from increased die size (which means higher cost). At equal die sizes performance increases will entirely come from the improved architecture, much like when going from Kepler to Maxwell but in this case worse as unlike going from GK110 to GM200, going from GP104/GP102 to GV102/104 there aren't (m)any DP units to throw away.

SlavjanA if your predictions came true I would be pleased :) I would probably go for the xx70 model then because due to your predictions it might be between the 1080ti an 1080 performance-wise :)

Vor year
SlavjanA
SlavjanA

Pricing should be similar to what we've got now with Pascal. Even though these new GPUs are more powerful, Nvidia doesn't tend to stray too far away from price brackets. For example, the 1080 Ti is like 50% to 60% more powerful than the 980 Ti and they both launched at pretty much the same price. As far as price drop though, don't expect much. Even though the 980 Ti is on par in gaming performance to a 1070, if not a little bit worse, the cheapest one is still $550 and it's been awhile since they came out. It's not really surprising though since I'm pretty sure Nvidia would rather push the new architecture and inventory for sale, rather than the old. So price/performance wise you'll be looking at buying Volta, or Pascal but second hand. Shouldn't be too bad though, I mean 1080 performance for roughly $250 to $300 is pretty good.

Vor year
Ockams Razor
Ockams Razor

I know it's onl guessing at this point but what kind of prices do you think we'll see for these cards at launch. Only recently got into PC building and hardware so not sure how pricing usually goes. Will all the pascal cards get a big price drop and these cards will basically take the price points they use to be at if not a bit higher?

You are going to want to hack kboost to on via msi afterburner, the gpu wastes frames by taking time to spinup every single benchmark as it throttles down below 1000 when they end. Also, I didn't see you raise the GPU voltage at all, I skimmed through the vid, you may have, but I am sure gpu-z is reported vrel. I got the mesh to 35 on my 7820x, worth further experimentation. The kboost hack should boost your score by a substantial margin. I am fairly certain you can get that ram to post at 4400+ if you didn't already try. Razer cortex is a decent program for disabling windows update and a number of other processes that you don't want running while benchmarking. I would also suggest to strip down windows features, ensure in task manager that you only have 70 or fewer processes running, and that your system is using 0-1% load per core in coretemp. It's worth a shot to set all cores to 49 if you didn't already. 1.33v core is nothing to be super concerned about for a few bench runs. Push pull may help. try pushing the gpu core higher until it crashes, as well as hbm. Definitely do the shunt mod and compare the results, but after you k-boost the gpu. Running the benchmark in full screen and setting the process priority to high or realtime will help.Good luck and I hope you stream again and try some of these things to push the score forward.

Vor year
whoUthank

You can only K-boost EVGA cards since pascal. This is why you need to hack it with MSI afterburner. So, you download Precision x version 5.13 ish. Then you download MSI afterburner. Then you take the default skin from evga precision and load it into msi-afterburner and then you can k-boost from MSI afterburner.

Vor year

Lots of points, that's why you want to be using k-boost. In the same fashion that he is overclocking his cpu for a fixed mhz, you'd want to do the same for the gpu. GPU throttling is basically an energy efficiency/powersaving/thermal mitigating feature, none of which you want while benchmarking nor need with water cooling.

Vor year
Kirinketsu

I do not remember if I had kboost enable when I was running some test on my OC a while back but I do remember I got over a 1000 point increase just from setting Prefer Maximum Performance in NCP, it didn't look like he set use Advance 3D settings and after that change I could not find a moment in the video where we got to see the clock speeds during the test transactions. The fact the clocks where at 300mhz at the start of each test and fps was 3 to 10 for 1 to 3 secs could have been costing him points could it not?

Vor year
whoUthank
whoUthank

You will need a program like prio to save cpu priority of applications, so you will have to begin the run in windowed mode, navigate to the process in task manager and elevate and save its priority to high/realtime and then stop the benchmark, and begin it again in full screen.

NVLink was first showcased in IBM POWER 8 servers. Google it. This platform resolves one of GPU computing developers’ and users’ fundamental pain points: keeping massively parallel GPUs fed with data. The two NVLink connections between the POWER8 CPU and the Tesla P100 GPUs enable data transfer over 2.5 times faster than the traditional Intel x86 based servers that use PCIe x16 Gen3.

Your right PCI-e gen 4.0 and gen 5.0 are coming soon, but the real question is if Nvidia would use the new PCI-e bus and do away with the SLi bridge? Like how RTG has done away with the Crossfire bridge and worked with connecting the GPU's over the PCI-e bus. So it is up in the air if Nvidia would just do away SLi altogether or convert to the NVLink standard on the higher end Models. I suspect we may only see NVlink on the Titan V tier lineup. I think the 2080Ti or 1180Ti with GDDR6 is going to take the top higher tier bracket and no longer be a cut down Titan like the 1080Ti was. The price and availability of HBM2 is one of the reasons why I do not think there would be a 2080Ti with HBM. There is also the issue of the much wider NVLink Bridge blocking off airflow of the AIB cooler designs that push air vertically away from the motherboard PCB. The blower style coolers pull air in and blow it out the back so the NVLink bridge doesn't effect cooling with that design. Also liquid cooling would pose a challenge with the NVLink bridge located directly above the GPU die.

LanStrikeGaming NVLink is cool, but PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 are also coming soon.

You are more of a pro at overclocking but I found once you get close to max use 10 point increments rather then jumps of 25 and sometimes you can squeeze just a few more points out. Great video Steve cool to see trial and error and setting some top 10 records.

I'm ordering the antistatic Mat now. Good overview and it looks like a high end piece. Was waiting to see more information in it. Price is very fair for its size and quality.

Bandwidth will definitely help in physics testing.. I have some shitty 1600Mhz DDR3 on my i7-3970X I tested dual vs quad channel and found quad channel gave me a noticeable increase on it's own for combine testing and CPU Physics.. I don't remember the scores (not record breaking) but the jump was great.. specially at 4.2Ghz all core.. I may try that technique of 4.2Ghz on first 2 cores and 4.0Ghz on the rest to reduce my thermals and power a little bit while maintaining most preformance gains for my 1080Ti.

What is your opinion on the ONSET HOBO data logger? Worth the retail price I'm seeing (around $240 for what looks like the same model.) compared to other solutions? Never heard or seen this brand before.....looks quite interesting an quite capable.

Gamers Nexus if they had 1-2 optional inputs....man this would be perfect all the way around. Like an optional HALL or Clamp based Current. Think I'll get one. Seems to have a good software stack with it. Is this what you use for your total system over time measurements?

We like it. It's not current clamp, but it's good for total system power.

What, the sound is mono?? :O Maybe for you... My AV Receiver always plays audio-voice in the center speaker. Except for, when there's no sound at all... :))) :( Too bad EVGA doesn't make AMD mobos, I would have loved an AM4 mobo... :(

Buildzoid has said he doesn't like Nvidia cards at all. Otherwise he would have gone for #1 with the 1080ti.
