I've never bought an AMD because Intel has always had the higher single core performance & lower power consumption but I'm glad AMD have knocked them off their pedestal because Intel have been milking their customers and pay-walling features for years. I would happily swap to AMD and Freesync if they could improve their single core speeds which is what matters for gaming so I'm holding off on buying an Intel until the new AMD CPU's come out next year.

I want to make a prediction that the ARM (latter variant on RISC concepts) processors are going to start seeing advances that will go unnoticed. As mobile devices have plateaued in the last few years, I expect that a greater demand on power may develop by the user base. It is a matter of the niche. When US Robotics introduced the Palm Pilot back in the 90's I think most people thought it was a fad. And it was for quite a few years. Enter Apple iPhone. And then palm computing has never been the same. But the hardware today seems to have dwindled. Who wants a phone or table that really hauls butt? I do. I want a tablet that is cost effective and still able to keep up with my 7700 Kaby Lake. And if it is going to run a linux/android os, it will probably be better off on that platform. Me thinks... Any thoughts? It would be sweet to keep up CISC processors at a cheaper by the dozen build process.

Zen 2 (Ryzen 3) will not only kill Intel's HEDT lineup, but also its consumer lineup. The gap is about to be closed, 2019 will be a MAJOR year for AMD.

The Intel HEDT plattform is fantastic ! Remember the great Kaby Lake X CPUs, which was the best selling Intel CPU in the last years. And remember the crippled X299 mainboards with the Kaby Lake X support ! So - HEDT is the only way to go ! Innovation made by Intel.

Hey I will watch the video, I didn't so far...just got my system back running (had a blue screen after a windows update reboot.... but will my Ryzen 7 2700X soon be "outdated"? I also don't understand why some people or "intel fanboys" I guess always say "You can't really game with AMD". Wtf?! Maybe in some benchmarks intel has better results, but Intel also had much much higher prices and only more performance/speed and the TDP is better, but it improved a lot at ryzen compared to the FX-8320 (the first ones I had before, from 2014, the 8320 had a TDP of 125W I think, now the 2700X has 105W lol, but 16 threads and faster threads and holds them all in turbo if needed, not only 1 core and a 2nd in turbo light like in the FX-8320...AMD really made a great job there and pricing at least here in Germany was very good, already in x-mas 2017 for the "Ryzen 1" the masses who can't afford high-end bought again much from Team Red :D I would like to support AMD too in the future also in GPU, but CPU I think they will have the better price/performance ratio also in the coming years...and a Ryz 7 2700X is really enough performance for a lot of things) per core, before the release everyone said "8 real cores with 16 threads and in 12nm? incl. basic cooler wraith prism? never for a price which is below the current intel CPU's!!!" the Intel alternatives below the (ultra-)highend were i7-7700(k) or 8800(k). Everyone who knows a bit about the stuff bought a "k", but some (cheap) complete systems had the versions without k...I mean all these intel CPU's have also a GPU onboard afaik? But all these guys have a PCI-E GPU...so iits no wonder that intel is moore expensive without any fans.... (forget which is with fans, the boxed or "unboxed"?!) AMD Ryzen 7 2700X works for my games so far very well... okay they want to bring out new graphics card, but I don't know if they make it ever back to a level which can compare with Nvidias top modells which are sold for such greedy prices and I think it was "you" who told after a 18 hours (the time Nvidia gave you the card for?! :X) 2070 test before its release that they disabled SLI? Now they stopped production of the 1080 Ti, because in fact its to good, a competition for the 2000-series (if we forget raytracing and all the other features almost no game, or a few single ones support... the 1080 Ti rised up to ~50% in price, average at least 30%+ (new card, they try to sell the remaining cards now for ~1000€, the companies simply made this, maybe Nvidia increased the price for them so that they can't sell really cheaper... But I can keep my Ryzen 7 2700X for a while or?! Since I said I won't put in a 2nd GPU and also no other M.2 NVMe drives the guy in the shop bought a crappy board, the only thing free would be RAM, I think it would have to be a dual of the same speed or even the exact same company model? I have a dual RAM kit running now, sold as "DDR4 16GB PC 3000 CL 16 ADATA KIT (2x8GB) XPG D40 (XPG is for the LED I guess... what the D40 means I don't know.. but CPU-Z tells me 1333 (=2666 since its DDR...) and 3000 via XMP, thats also the maximum this Board from Gigabyte supports...part number: "DDR4 3000" and a serial number which ends with "0300", can you/the persons in the store which put all parts together change the name or is it produced this way and can't be changed? like the production week I think? The week is 15/18....First timing is 16 (for that is CL or?), I also think he sold me (and many others?) a 3TB HDD only 10€ more expensive than a 1TB, knowing that ~2,2TB is maximum for MBT and they make very much (software) "repairing" or installing windows with partition etc, many people will get problems I guess, I finally made it via cmd.exe and diskpart, but a older woman who doesn't know thaaat much and buys a desktop there? Every time somehow both drives for example have to be formated and are empty again you get a problem with installing windows 10 from a USB stick created via MediaCreationTool or how MS names this... I didn't knew that as in the last years I lost the connection a bit... I have computers for like 25 years now...in the 90's when I was a real small child I got my first (IBM) 386 with 25 MHz and floppy disk A: (1,44MB not the large B: ones)... but in the last years I had many other things and I hope the CPU won't be "outdated" soon? I don't overclock it, as it runs with turbo between ~1,4 and over 4,3 GHz per thread/core if turbo (also sold in the sales contract as "AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 4.35GHZ AM4.........", the Cache is wrong there with 20MB, but this error also existed on some websites or in the selling description of some online sellers in this first weeks...it "only" has 16MB L3 Cache... you have to sign and pay a amount, depends how much, I paid around 15% in advance, so he knows its a serious order and he can buy it from the stock, its like a union of small shops, together they are stronger at the wholesale as many things like RAM etc. is a mass product and buying as one company, but for 7 shops and each owner makes his thing, but it brings you an additional discount I guess) before he orders the parts, so you get at least good prices, at least it was for at least 2 decades this way that old things got cheaper and not more expensive than their release price 2 years later or so... I'm happy Ryzen kicks Intel in the ass (I mean in selling numbers, competition, I mean 8C/16T vs a i7-7700k which comes without any cooler more expensive at the time I bought it?! (less than 4 weeks after its release I think I signed the sales contract, the threadripper was also new for the i9 Extreme sector back than with up to 32 Cores or so.... sorry if "offtopic", if you have a video with/for RAM/CPU/MAINBOARD/GPU more all in one I can ask there?! I'm just very unsure...

My ancient Core i7 920 in an equally stone-age Asus P6T is still running strong after 8 solid years of gaming, general use and barely ever being turned off during that whole time. It lives in a hot humid garage that's only under 80F when I am using the room and the A/C is on. Right now as I type it's sitting at about 48C and under stress goes to 60C more or less. I think that's pretty darn good. Now that I'm looking at finally building a new rig, these AMD chips look like they can save me tons of cash. But will I get this kind of longevity out of them?

Cannibalizing your own products is ironically not that uncommon these days. I think when manufacturers realize they've milked a really popular model long enough by making a similar proceed model they know they can repeat those same high level sales and greater going forward. It's ensuring regular major cash flow. I hope that makes sense.

I've been itching to build a new CPU since the release of Ryzen. All this CPU power coming to the market is really compelling. My current z77 mobo i7 gtx 1080 (recent upgrade) build with SATA SSD's from 2012 is slowly getting "old". It serves me well for what I'm doing right now. But I know in the soon, but not too soon, future I'll be needing a more powerful machine. Thanks for the observations, Linus.

I think one thing you didn't really touch on was the fact that software is now trying to catch up with hardware. Like you said, we had 10 years of 4 cores - most consumer and prosumer software developed over that decade had to be optimised for such 'few' cores' including game engines... problem is now Ryzen has rocked that boat and given us (from both sides) plenty more cores and really short space of time (10 years @ 4.. then 2 years we're at 8/16 or even more), issue being a LOT of software just isn't optimised to scale that well. Even now we see prosumer software that just doesn't know how to utilise a ton of cores. Game engines are even further behind. I think this argument will be lost in another 1-2 years once dev's know exactly how to scale processing much more efficiently - games included (let's not forget how many games are optimised for console first also (not many CPU cores)). There's still work done on a GPU that can be now moved back to a CPU freeing up GPU for more suited tasks and hopefully better performance.

I have a 6950X on a Rampage V Edition 10 booting from a 960 Pro M.2 2 TB powered by a AX1500i ... it's clearly HEDT. I rather buy more overpriced HEDT systems than a single Xeon system. I do have a Xeon in my other system (2680v3 on same mainboard but with 2.5" SSD). It runs ECC memory. I hate that system, well, the CPU because for that price I could have gotten another 6950X and ended up with more power. Your idea of killing HEDT and replacing it with Xeon W is bad. Really bad. HEDT that supports ECC memory and with some CPUs supporting multisocket too makes much more sense: You can overclock them if you want. I see HEDT as Xeons without restraints and some not so important features.

I think AMD is truly gonna overtake Intel with their Zen 2 7nm architectures. Even the mid range Ryzen 5 3xxx series are gonna be 8 core 16 thread processors for what? 200-300 bucks. Then you have 12 and even 16 core processores for the high end market for around 300 to 500 bucks. I dont see why new customers should stick with Intel at this point. The market has finally gotten competitive again and Intel is stuck with 14nm because they still can't figure this whole debacle with their 12nm stuff out. But I guess they will somehow manipulate end consumers again just like they did for decades to stay competitive with inferior technology.

AMD has been sketchy about the desktop version specifics, with rumors going both ways, so far. If they make *single-die* 16-core mainstream desktop Zen 2 CPUs, *and* like Zen and Zen+, they actually meet every marketed performance target (as opposed to, say, ARM, where they show off specific optimized cases to get the biggest graph gaps), though, I'll reach into my wallet and upgrade to one, for sure (I got 32GB DDR3 for less than 16GB DDR4 costs today - yes I actually use it - and if I go AMD, I'm getting ECC; that will be painful to my wallet).

Lots of great points here. I'd argue that yes, while most programs now are able to get by on 8 cores or less and it is great that AMD finally kicked Intel in the butt, who's to say that the hardware and software problem isn't cylindrical? No need to support massive cores in software because most hardware doesn't have it. Or since most hardware doesn't have crazy core counts until now, it's easier to program for lower cores. Besides we all know Adobe's coding has been crap for multi-core efficiency so hard to let that test stand out. Otherwise even if you claim there's no need for HEDT with weaker tech and AMD Threadripper on the table, you have to know that programs that seem to fully utilize HEDT systems (3d rendering) are helped by high core counts and the programs that aren't for example, photo editing, I just queue up multiple export instances. It's not the question that sure, HEDT may not be as necessary as before because most consumer chips now are fantastic and it's great to see AMD give Intel a run. But for people doing work where computer time is money, literally, we'll always find benefit from cores, frequency, or both. That's why because of lower clock speeds, I did *not* go with the 7980 XE in my build and went with the highest clocked single thread chip (7940X), and then overclocked the hell out of it - enough to pretty much match the 7980XE / 9980XE. Best of both worlds IMO. Edit. Also sure, yes the tech on the consumer chips is great to accelerate some workloads ala Premiere as you said, but I don't think enough is done in-depth compared to that one program to show the outstanding benefits of the integrated GPU compared to actually buying a discreet one. Sure it works *in Premiere* but if integrated GPUs were so good, wouldn't everyone be doing them?

Can still semi-agree that yeah what was once the HEDT segment is now a lot more blurred than before. Guess well see what happens.

Is it worth waiting for the 9th gen processors on laptop or can I go with the 8th gen. Planning to get either Dell G7 or Asus SCAR II in January 2019. Yelp!

Anyone know what or when the next X series chipset will be? What will be after X299? I think it'll be X599? Interested if anyone knows anything about it or what features it'll have.

Or will it be Z399 and X599 will be Xeon stuff?

Intel to AMD is like Android to iPhones. whatever is better on paper is always the superior product. as long as it's spec'ed higher, it HAS to be better

Can i say this.AMD from the period it was made to the market. AMD did it to make the Motherboard to be upgraded when have some upgraded Processors from AMD.Intel in the other hand. It asks you when you have to upgrade your motherboard with a new Processor. Sell or throw away your Intel Motherboard and buy a new one to be able to build an Intel new Processor. Not to mention the price with the performance of the Processor of AMD or RYZEN 5,7 as both now can compete with Intel Core i7,9 easily. Intel starts to lose consumers for the price they put and the restricted Motherboard upgrades. Greedy right for Intel as had no other company to compete with but lately. Thanks for AMD now as consumers can buy a good PC for PHOTOSHOP and Auto CAD programs compatibility. Wish that AMD keeps the price in the hand of consumers for like two years or more and don't get greedy as will find another company to compete with both Intel,AMD if that happen. Great video man ad enjoyed the comparison as for real Intel is losing their sense and try to catch up with AMD .

This is why I'm hoping all the rumors around Zen 2 are wrong, and AMD puts a focus on per thread performance rather then pushing useless 12/16 cores for consumer CPU's.

Kevin King they are. AMD has already promised performance improvements per clock on Zen 2. They haven't officially stated product specs, per model, which is what the rumors are about. Zen 2 should about match Skylake, at the same speed.

Checking on our local store, truth is that AMD is still the winner when it comes to price. I can buy "almost" TWO that is 2 Ryzen7 upgrade kits "CPU+Memory+RAM" compared to a lonely 1 8th Gen Corie i7 upgrade kit that also include "CPU+Memory+RAM" Now add a good GPU into the mix and the question remains will i really feel the performance difference? No... Just no... For the "standard person with standard work loads" the AMD will be GOOD ENOUGH if not better considering one can have TWO physical computers if need be. Or just one with a crazy GPU and it STILL will be less expensive then a Intel. Truth is "many" normal consumers can't afford Intel.

Uhm, Compiling code can be done in a multi-threaded manner for a long time already. I wonder why you put a cross on there on your video. When using GCC you can apply how many threads can run to speed up compiling of code. It's obviously logical that the code should support multi-threading when compiling.

They just got insanely greedy. Even though I can buy whatever I want for my hobby. It insults my intelligence when they literally try to take you for a fool. Nvidia on the same trajectory.

I say, Intel really has some work cut out for it’s self. I think I’d still prefer to build an i9 desktop over a 2700x but damn they are tempting my consumer wallet voting wrath.
